If you’ve lived in Charlotte long enough and have ever driven anywhere near Concord during Labor Day weekend or that certain night in October – then you know about Charlotte Motor Speedway. Let’s go racin’ boys!
Built in 1959, by Bruton Smith, the Speedway features a 1.5 mile quad oval track. Considered the “home track” for NASCAR (with most teams located in the Charlotte area), this track hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup races each year – the prestigious Coca-Cola 600 and Bank of America 500. Also featured is a state-of-the-art quarter mile drag-racing strip – which happens to be the only four-lane, all concrete drag strip in the country! Next to the drag strip sits a clay oval, known to host events such as the World of Outlaws finals among other popular dirt races.
What you may not know is all of the other fun there is to be had at Charlotte Motor Speedway. On top of the auto shows and race events throughout the year, the magical Christmas light show (on display each year from Thanksgiving-the end of December) is a MUST SEE for everyone! Additionally, the Charlotte Motor Speedway is actually open all year long for behind the scene tours. For race enthusiasts and the curious minds alike, here is your chance to see and hear what Charlotte Motor Speedway is all about! Tour the garage, cruise down Pit Road, take your picture in the winner’s circle, and enjoy a ride around the track (you’ll feel that force of those 24-degree banks) while learning all about the history of the speedway. You can even check out the Speedway Club, frontstretch suites, and visit the Performance Racing network studios – all of this topped off with a stop at the top of the Ford Grandstand for spectacular views of Charlotte Motor Speedway in all its’ glory.
Tour dates and times vary depending on other scheduled events, for more information and to book your tour – visit the Charlotte Motor Speedway “fan info” page here.
