Looking for something a little different to do this Saturday with the family? Load up the kids and head over to the Levine Museum of the New South for a day full of educational fun! This museum is home to more than 1,000 artifacts, displays, and interactive learning boards making up the nation’s most comprehensive post-Civil War Southern history exhibit. It’s centerpiece topic, “Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers”, includes things like: a one-room farmer‘s house, a cotton mill, an African-American hospital, an early Belk department store, and a civil-rights era lunch counter. As you make your way through these displays, you’ll learn the history of how Charlotte came to be called ‘The Queen City’ and how the ‘Charlotte Hornets’ name has ties to the Revolution. With the hands on and interactive approach provided in these exhibits, the kids are sure to enjoy this family education day!

Once you’ve learned all about how the South came to be, you can make your way through some of the smaller exhibits which focus on local art, culture, and history. Currently being featured are: ‘We are the Music Makers’, and ‘¡NUEVOlution! Latinos and the New South’, and ‘Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited, Pop-Up, Abridged Edition’. These featured exhibits do change every few months so there is always something new to learn! What’s even cooler is that some of these displays are placed elsewhere on display in the community once they finish a rotation at the museum. Once you’ve seen it once there’s no reason to go back, right? Guess again! Aside from the exhibits that are always changing, Levine Museum of the New South also presents a wide variety of programs and events throughout the year. From film screenings, to community days, and even a night of elegance known as ‘The Taste of the New South’ – there is always fun to be had here at the museum!
