If you’re not already familiar – this is NOT a museum full of mint… that’s right, you’ll have to bring your own breath fresheners on this trip. But what this is, for starters, is the oldest art museum in all of North Carolina. The first location, in Randolph, opened its’ doors in 1936 after being housed in the original branch of the United States Mint (yes, that is probably where the name came from!). This location features collections that span more than 4,500 years of creative art from all over the world. As you tour the museum, you’ll experience art from the ancient Americas, ceramics and decorative arts, fashion, European, African, and Asian art – among other collections. Also found at this location is a lavish reference library, museum shop, and a theatre featuring both educational events and performances.

Designed by the famous Machado and Silvetti Associates of Boston, the Uptown location combines inspiring architecture with stunning exhibitions to give visitors a more modern artistic atmosphere. This museum is home to the internationally renowned Craft and Design collection, as well as several exhibits focusing on American, contemporary, and European art. The Mint Museum Uptown features a 240-seat auditorium, several art studios, a restaurant, and museum shop for its visitors! As a huge part of the Levine Center for the Arts, you’ll also find on this campus: the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture, the Knight Theater, and the Duke Energy Center.

On top of the everyday exhibits and special showings, the Mint features a wide array of special events and shows. The museum is also available for rent for special occasions. For admission rates, membership purchase, and current exhibits, please see their website.
