As school is nearing its end and the days are growing longer and warmer, it is hard not to think about summer vacation. Throughout the area, there is a litany of activities that children (and adults) can get involved with to have fun, learn a new skill or refine a talent. The hard part might just be narrowing down the choices!
The following listing highlights just some of the activities being offered through the Town of Harrisburg Parks and Rec Department. There are certainly many, many more in the Charlotte-area, but this is a great place to start.
ART – Weekly classes are taught by instructor Kelsey Hoke. Classes are offered for children ages 4-17.
BASEBALL – Unmatched Performance, an organization founded by former professional baseball player Raphael Turner, is offering camp for boys and girls ages 6-9. For children ages 10-12, Blake Sides (of Spartanburg Methodist College) will be offering a baseball camp.
FOOTBALL – Cornelius Street, defensive coordinator for Victory Christian Center School, is offering “Big Game Football Skills Camp” for age groups 5-8 and 9-12.
HORSEHOES –Just show up and play! Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am-noon at Harrisburg Park.
JUMP ROPE – Camp (Tuesdays and Fridays for one month) for all skill levels will be offered by Harrisburg Elementary P.E. teacher, Scott Wolfe.
KARATE – Weekly classes (for ages 3-6 and 7-11) are offered by Calvin Reid, a 5th degree black belt in Goju Ryu Karate.
LEGOS – Bricks for Kidz week-long camps will be offered by instructor Laura Porretta. These camps are open to children ages 5-12.
SELF DEFENSE – Learn to defend yourself. These classes are for girls/ladies ages 13 and up and are taught by Calvin Reid. Reid is a 5th degree black belt.
SOCCER – Mike Raymond will offer camp for both tots (ages 3-5) and youth (6-12). An additional camp will be offered by the UNCC men’s soccer team for boys and girls, ages 5-13.
TAE KWON DO – Weekly classes (Mondays/Thursdays) are offered by instructor David Robinette. Class is open to those ages 12 and up.
TENNIS – Interested in tennis? Classes (for children and adults) plus week-long camps are being offered all summer long. Classes and camps start for children as young as age 5 and are taught by Coaches Neil and Kaylee.
ZUMBA – Come shake it and exercise! Classes are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays and are lead by instructor Jennifer El-Abbaddi.
