If you have you been driving, or walking, around Mecklenburg or Cabarrus Counties lately, you may have noticed these adorable little boxes with books in them. You may have spotted them at a local park, in front of a business or even in front of someone’s home. These boxes are part of a program called “Little Free Library” which began in 2009 and has quickly expanded all around the world. The “libraries” were originally started by Todd Bol, who built a small schoolhouse to honor his mother, a school teacher. He put books in the schoolhouse and placed it in his front yard along with a sign that read “FREE BOOKS”. His neighbor’s loved the idea and used it, so Todd he built more houses and shared them. The rest is history.
How does it work? You borrow a book and/or share a book. You share books that you find engaging, entertaining, or enlightening and once you borrow a book, you return it for others to enjoy. It is something so easy to do and can quickly bring a smile to someone’s face. Add to that the structures the books are housed in are ADORABLE!
The Little Free Library movement is quickly emerging in Charlotte. Currently there are 11 libraries in our area and we would love for there to be more. That is where you come in. Leigh Brown and Associates would like to sponsor a location that would like a Little Free Library. All you need to do is complete this short form:

At the conclusion of this contest, Leigh and her team will review the applications and on October 22 (in conjunction with National Friends of Libraries Week), they will announce a winner! GOOD LUCK!
