The Matthews Community Farmers’ Market began in 1991 as a small market held every other week and now has achieved such such success that it is open year-round every Saturday morning and Tuesday evenings during June-July. At the weekly market, customers can expect to be able to purchase locally raised food which helps support area farmers. This type of market is what is called a “grower-only” market, meaning that all of the crops sold at the market have been grown within a 50-mile radius of Matthews, NC. Customers are able to meet, and talk to, the food growers themselves which allows customers to form a connection with the source of their food and allows them to get to the know the person/farm who grows it.
During the summer months approximately 40 vendors are in attendance and during the Winter Market, about 25 vendors participate. What can you expect to see at the Market? Here are some examples, depending on what is in season:
- Mushrooms
- Grassfed beef
- Free range/organic chicken eggs
- Goat cheese
- Honey
- Hot peppers
- Micro greens
- Herbs
- Seasonal produce
- Handmade ice pops
- Artisan breads
- Doughnuts
- Handmade baskets
- Plants and flowers
In addition to the food market, customers will have the opportunity to observe cooking demonstration and listen to live music. All adding to the community atmosphere that can be enjoyed at this event that allows you to remember what “down home charm” is all about.
