Freedom Park 02No list of the Best of Charlotte would be complete without Freedom Park; a 98-acre park located 3 miles from the downtown area of Charlotte between the historic Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods. The park is centered on a 7-acre lake and features paved trails, tennis and volleyball courts, athletic fields, playground equipment, and more.
In September 2005, an indoor shelter was opened at the Park. The shelter has amazing views of the lake and includes a large public room, a fireplace, large screen TV, offices, a kitchen, rest rooms, and a concrete patio. It is available for rental for weddings, receptions, small sporting events, and community meetings.
The park pavilion features free films and musical performances in the throughout the summer. Every September Freedom Park is the site of the five-day long Festival in the Park, which annually attracts over 100,000 visitors, and has been recognized as a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. Founded in 1964, Festival in the Park is is designed to promote and stimulate interest in the arts through music, arts and crafts. Freedom Park is located at 1900 East Blvd and also features Master Gardener Demonstration Garden. The mature garden features shade and sun garden beds with wide grassy paths near the main sidewalks and under the trees in Charlotte’s busiest ‘central park’. It’s easy to discover what grows well in the Piedmont region as tags identify plant names and growing information, making your self-guided tour an informative one.
