Known as the oldest BBQ in North Carolina, the 84th Annual Mallard Creek Presbyterian Barbeque is being held Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 10 am – until the food runs out (usually between 6-7 pm). With over 20,000 expected to attend this year, this is much more than your average church barbeque. So while it’s roots are as a church barbeque, over the years it’s become popular with politicians wanting to “meet and greet” with local voters. So popular in fact, that there is a “BBQ only” line and a line for people wanting to meet with the politicians.
The barbeque first began in 1929 as a way to raise funds to pay off debt for a newly built portion of the church. The first year they raised $89.50 after expenses, which was enough to pay off the debt with a small amount left over. From that, the Annual Mallard Creek Barbeque was born. Over the years, it’s popularity continued grow and today it has become a must-not-miss event. The barbeque is always held on the fourth Thursday of the Month in October. The funds raised go towards the overall missions of the church, in addition to the original purpose of reducing facility debt.
This year, the church will be cooking up more than 13,000 pounds of pork, 2,500 gallons of Brunswick stew and 4,000 pounds of coleslaw. Just $9 gets you all of this plus applesauce and bread. If you eat on site, you also get complimentary coffee with other beverages available for purchase. Here is the entire menu. You can purchase tickets in advance, but it’s not necessary. However, if you have an order of 50 plates or more, please call ahead with your order at (704)547-0323. Get an order form here: Mallard Creek BBQ Order Form
The Barbeque will be held at 11400 Mallard Creek Road at the site of the Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church’s Community House. Please come out and say hey to me. I’ll be there all day looking for your smiling face.
